The HPM Membership Programme equips learners with practical learning, study and examination skills that they can use in every subject throughout their high-school career. The programme also provides subject-choice and career guidance, psychometric assessments, online academic resources and ongoing support until the end of Grade 12.
The programme is suitable for learners who want to improve the way they study, retain information, and approach tests and examinations.
It can benefit learners who are struggling academically, as well as learners who are already performing well but want to work more effectively and prepare for the increased demands of Grades 10 to 12 and tertiary studies.
The practical workshop focus on the development of essential learning skills, including:
Homework and study habits
Motivation and goal setting
Emotional resilience
Short-term and long-term memory
Creative study techniques
Reading and listening skills
Effective use of textbooks
Answer-formulation skills
Summarising techniques
Memory systems
Research skills
Examination and revision strategies
Learners also practise applying these techniques to real schoolwork.
No. HPM does not teach curriculum content or provide extra lessons in individual subjects. We teach learners how to learn. The skills covered can be applied to any subject, in any grade, and include studying, summarising, remembering information, answering examination questions and managing examination time effectively.
The transition to Grades 10 to 12 brings more complex work, a faster pace and a greater workload. Examinations also contribute more towards final results, increasing from approximately 40% in earlier grades to as much as 75% in Grade 12.
Learners are also expected to answer longer, more detailed questions. Some long-answer questions may count as much as 50 marks. Effective reading, formulation, memory and examination skills therefore become increasingly important.
Complete the online enrolment form at www.hpmsignup.co.za or click on the Sign Up button on this page.
Places are limited and are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Parents are therefore encouraged to complete the enrolment process as soon as possible.
A learner’s place is confirmed once the registration has been processed and the relevant confirmation has been issued by HPM.
Once your registration has been received, you can expect a response (to the email address provided) from HPM within three working days.
The email will contain the relevant class dates, times, venue information and enrolment documents. Please check your spam or junk folder if you have not received the email within three working days.
The Standard HPM Membership costs R6,600 per learner and remains valid for the learner’s school career until the completion of Grade 12. Parents may select any of the 1 - 6 months payment schedules. Payment total may be lower or higher than the membership fee if a shorter or longer schedule is selected.
Membership includes:
The five-day Learning Skills Workshop
A personalised Learning Skills Profile to be used by the teacher for peronalised focus
Interest and Personality Assessments
Subject-choice and career guidance
A parent feedback session
Access to future refresher workshops until Grade 12
Assistance with compiling a professional CV when required for tertiary applications
24/7 access to the HPM Online Portal with previous examination papers and memorandums, as well as s comprehensive mathematics video library
Yes. Parents may choose between a discounted once-off payment or a flexible payment plan ranging from two to six months.
During the enrolment process, parents can select the payment option and payment dates that best suit their circumstances.
Yes. A parent feedback session is held at the end of the workshop. During this session, parents learn more about the techniques taught during the course and how they can support their child at home without taking over the learner’s responsibility.
The programme consists of approximately 30 hours of practical training presented over five days during a school holiday.
Specific class times and venue information are sent to parents once enrolment has been processed.
Workshops are presented at participating schools during school holidays. HPM works at schools by invitation and regularly presents classes at different schools.
A learner is not necessarily limited to attending at their own school. Subject to space being available, HPM members may attend an appropriate class at another participating school.
The language of instruction depends on the official school language policy at the school where the workshop is presented. Some classes are presented only in Afrikaans or only in English, while most classes are bilingual. Each learner receives an HPM textbook containing all the information and techniques covered during the workshop. he textbook is available in either Afrikaans or English and will be provided in the learner’s main language of instruction at school. This ensures that learners can follow the programme and refer back to the material in the language they use for their schoolwork. Learners attending a bilingual class will therefore still receive their textbook in the appropriate language.
Parents may contact HPM to request information about another available class. Classes are presented at different schools during school holidays, and we will assist you in identifying a suitable alternative where possible.
Attendance remains subject to the availability of space in the selected class.
Yes. One of the greatest benefits of HPM Membership is that learners may attend future workshops again whenever they feel they need a refresher, at no additional course fee, until the end of Grade 12.
A returning learner joins a scheduled HPM workshop together with learners who are attending the programme for the first time. The facilitator will therefore teach and explain the same core memory systems, study techniques and learning principles to the full class.
Returning learners may attend the full workshop again or choose to refresh only the specific sections in which they need additional support. This allows them to focus on the systems or techniques that are most relevant to their current needs.
Learners may return to:
Refresh their understanding of specific memory systems or study techniques.
Correct or strengthen techniques they are not yet using confidently.
Receive help applying the techniques to new subjects.
Apply the same proven methods to more advanced work in a new grade.
Practise the techniques using their current schoolwork.
Attend only the relevant sections of the workshop instead of repeating the full programme.
The HPM systems remain consistent because they are designed to work across different subjects and grades. A refresher workshop therefore does not introduce a completely new programme or a new set of study methods. Instead, the techniques are revised, demonstrated and applied to the learner’s current subjects and grade-level work.
As learners progress through high school, their subjects, workload and academic demands change. The opportunity to return provides valuable ongoing support and helps them apply the same effective techniques to increasingly complex work.
Although refresher attendance is free for HPM members, learners must book their place in advance by contacting the HPM office. Attendance at the full workshop or selected sections remains subject to space being available in the chosen class.
HPM sessions are conducted in small groups of fewer than 20 learners, and there are no individual classes.
The HPM facilitator has access to each learner’s Learning Skills Profile. This identifies the learner’s strengths and the areas in which further development may be needed. This allows the facilitator to personalise their focus and provide more targeted assistance within the group setting, rather than using exactly the same approach for every learner.
Working in a group environment is also intentional. Teenagers are highly influenced by their peers and often feel more comfortable learning alongside others rather than being singled out. The group setting creates a supportive, collaborative atmosphere where learners can engage, participate and develop their skills without feeling isolated or under unnecessary pressure.
The HPM Membership includes online Interest and Personality Assessments. These results can be considered together with the learner’s Aptitude Test results to assist with subject and career decisions.
The Aptitude Test is generally administered separately through the school and is not automatically included as part of the HPM Membership. Where a learner has completed an Aptitude Test through their school or another participating school, the results can be used together with the HPM Interest and Personality Assessments to provide more comprehensive guidance.
The assessments consider three important areas:
Aptitude: The areas in which the learner shows potential or ability
Interest: What the learner enjoys and is naturally drawn towards
Personality: The environments, activities, and career types that may suit the learner
The combined information helps the learner and parent make more informed subject and career decisions. The results are intended to guide the decision-making process rather than make the final decision on the learner’s behalf.
Members receive 24/7 access to online academic resources, including:
Previous examination papers
Examination memorandums
A comprehensive mathematics video library. Short video explanations covering mathematics topics across different grades
Other academic resources
These resources can be used throughout the learner’s remaining school career.
Yes. An HPM member may attend any future workshop or refresher session (at any school where a workshop is presented) again at no additional fee until the completion of Grade 12. This is especially useful when a learner wants to revise the techniques, needs renewed motivation, or wants to strengthen the application of the skills in a later grade. Please contact the HPM office to inquire about and book a spot in future workshops.
No educational programme can guarantee a specific improvement in marks. HPM equips learners with proven tools and techniques that can help them study and work more effectively. The results will depend on how consistently the learner applies the skills, completes their summaries, and takes responsibility for their own academic progress.
Yes. The learning, research, summarising, memory, and time-management skills taught by HPM remain valuable after school.
HPM can also assist members with compiling a professional CV when one is required for a tertiary, bursary, or other post-school application.
HPM has been helping learners develop effective learning and study skills since 1989. The programme operates at more than 190 participating schools and works at schools by invitation.
